Amazon Nabs Exclusive UK Streaming Rights to Halle Berry-Starring ‘Extant’

Halle Berry Extant

Amazon Prime Instant Video will be the exclusive home to “Extant,” a new sci-fi series starring Oscar winner Halle Berry, in the UK. The company has inked a deal with CBS Studios International, which is handling international distribution for the sci-fi drama, to premiere the series on its subscription add-on streaming service on July 10.

Additional episodes of the show will be available on Amazon in the UK the day after they premiere in the US, effectively making Prime Instant Video the only “channel” one can watch the show on in the UK.

The deal is similar to an arrangement Netflix has with Sony Pictures Television for “Breaking Bad” in the UK. During the Emmy-winning drama’s final season, Netflix debuted new episodes across the pond the day after their US broadcast.

“Extant” tells the story of a female astronaut (Berry) trying to reconnect with her family after spending a year in space. Her experiences in space lead to events that ultimately change the course of human history. Berry’s co-stars include Goran Visnjic, Camryn Manheim, Michael O’Neill, and Grace Summer.

The drama is co-produced by Steven Spielberg’s Amblin Entertainment and CBS Television Studios, and will air on CBS in the US beginning July 9. Executive producers include Spielberg, Greg Walker, Mickey Wisher, who wrote the script, Brooklyn Weaver, Justin Falvey, and Darryl Frank. Berry serves as co-executive producer.
