Thunderbirds Are Go Amazon

Amazon announced today that it will debut the 13-episode first season of “Thunderbirds Are Go”on Prime Video in the U.S. on April 22. It will be preceded by the premiere of the one-hour “Thunderbirds” special “Ring of Fire, Parts 1 and 2” on April 15. The series will be available on Prime Video in the UK, Germany and Austria later this year.

Amazon acquired the rights to four 13-episode seasons of “Thunderbirds Are Go” in February.

The series is a reinvention of “Thunderbirds” (1964-66), a British science-fiction television series created by Gerry and Sylvia Anderson, the husband and wife team who were later responsible for “Space: 1999” (1975-77), starring Martin Landau and Barbara Bain.

In “Thunderbirds Are Go,” actress Rosamund Pike (“Gone Girl”) provides the voice the character of Lady Penelope, originally voiced by Sylvia Anderson, who passed away on March  15 at the age of 90. Her ex-husband and series co-creator Gerry died in 2012.

The original “Thunderbirs” had electronic marionette puppets “acting” against a backdrop of scale models, a process the producers dubbed “Supermarionation.” (The technique was used by “South Park” creators Trey Park and Matt Stone in their satirical 2004 feature “Team America: World Police.”)

Produced by ITV Studios and Pukeko Pictures in collaboration with Peter Jackson’s Weta Workshop, the new series is being made using a unique a mixture of CGI animation and live-action model sets. Although the Amazon will be premiering “Thunderbirds Are Go” in the U.S., the series already made its broadcast debut in New Zealand on TV2 2015, and it has been sold to more than 40 countries worldwide.

Set in 2060, “Thunderbirds Are Go” tells the story of the Tracy family, who work for International Rescue, a sea, land, air and space rescue organization.

“Thunderbirds Are Go” is executive produced by Estelle Hughes (“Driver Dan’s Story Train”), Giles Ridge (“Pocoyo”), Richard Taylor (“The Lord of the Rings”) and Andrew Smith (“District 9”) David Scott (“LEGO Star Wars”) and Theo Baynton (“The Wotwots”) direct from scripts by Rob Hoegee (“Generator Rex,” “Teen Titans”).
