Amazon’s ‘Alpha House’ Was the Most-Watched Show on Amazon, Says Amazon

/ Nov 19, 2013

Amazon claims “Alpha House,” its new political comedy starring John Goodman, was the most-watched show on Amazon Instant Video through the weekend. Though, in a move that’s reminiscent of its competitor Netflix, the company opted to not disclose any more information about the number of people who watched the show, which debuted on Friday, November 15.

Created and written by Pulitzer Prize winner Garry Trudeau and starring Goodman, Mark Consuelos, Clark Johnson, and Matt Malloy, the show follows a group of Republican senators who are all living in the same house in DC and getting into all kinds of trouble.

“The Amazon Studios process is designed to use data and feedback from customers to help us create and launch shows they will love,” said Roy Price, director of Amazon Studios, Amazon’s programming arm, in a statement. “It is incredibly rewarding to see that process working — customers loved the pilot and we’re getting the same reaction to the series.”

Beyond the fact that Amazon’s customers love the show, there are a couple of other reasons for not being surprised that “Alpha House” topped the ratings on Amazon over the weekend. The first three episodes of the comedy, including the pilot, which debuted in the spring, are available for free to everyone on Amazon Instant Video. Most other programming on the video service has to either be purchased individually or is only available if you subscribe to the annual Prime service. In addition, with “Alpha House” being Amazon’s first foray into TV-quality original content, the company but a lot of marketing muscle behind the show — something which Netflix also did when it debuted “House of Cards.”

Next up for Amazon is “Betas,” a comedy set in Silicon Valley culture, which will debut this Friday, November 22.

Look out for our official review of “Alpha House” later this afternoon.
