Amy Poehler’s Online Community, Smart Girls at the Party, Acquired by Legendary

/ Oct 13, 2014

Legendary Entertainment’s growing digital network, which includes Chris Hardwick’s Nerdist Industries and Felicia Day’s Geek & Sundry, has added another big name to its roster: Amy Poehler. The company has acquired the “Parks & Recreation” star’s Smart Girls at the Party online community.

Created in 2008 by Poehler, Meredith Walker (who heads the network), and Amy Miles, Smart Girls began as a web series. The success of the show — it won Poehler a Webby Award for best actress and was recognized by SXSW Education and Common Sense Media for its inspirational content — led to the creation of a website and online community under the same moniker, which seeks to encourage and empower young women to express themselves through the arts, volunteerism, and activism.

Today, Smart Girls reaches more than 550,000 fans on Facebook, and more 115,000 subscribers on YouTube.

Joining Legendary’s digital network, Smart Girls will now be able to develop and produce multi-platform branded content, as well as have access to Legendary’s resources in advertising, marketing, audience development, and production infrastructure, the company said. The community will be overseen by Legendary’s president of TV and Digital Media Bruce Rosenblum.

For Legendary, its hoping to build a digital network that can be a top destination for young males and females on the web. Through properties like Smart Girls, Nerdist, and Geek & Sundry, Legendary also plans to incubate new IP and find emerging talent.

It’s proving to be a banner year for the production company when it comes to the digital space. In addition to the Geek & Sundry and Smart Girls acquisitions, Legendary is also producing its first digital feature/series for Crackle and Content Media, and recently scored a deal with Netflix to produce the Judd Apatow-produced rom-com “Love.”

Here’s a video from Poehler about the Legendary deal that was posted to Smart Girls’ YouTube channel:
