Annual Vlogbrother-Led Charity Campaign, Project for Awesome, Starts Today

/ Dec 10, 2014

Hank Green Project for Awesome

Project for Awesome, a yearly YouTube campaign that raises money for multiple charities, starts today and will last up through December 16.

The campaign, created in 2007 by Hank and John Green (the titular Vlogbrothers), aims to raise a minimum of $500,000 for different charity organizations (to “decrease world suck”). The charities that will benefit this year from Project for Awesome include Save the Children and Partners in Health, both of which the Greens and their audience base have worked with in the past.

In addition, supporters of the campaign can nominate other organizations to donate the money to. From today to the 12, donations will go to the aforementioned charities, while donations received between the 13 and 16 will go to the community nominated charities.

Project for Awesome invites supporters to donate via Indiegogo. Besides the satisfaction of having done a good thing, the campaign offers donors access to perks like a special edition of the “The Fault in Our Stars” (John Green’s famous YA novel), original art from Minute Physics, and a YouTube calendar that features baby pictures of popular personalities on the platform.

The project spans thousands of YouTube creators each year, each of whom have the chance to promote charity organizations of their choice. Anyone wishing to advocate for a charity via YouTube video can send theirs to Project for Awesome’s website between noon on December 12 and noon on December 14.

Part of the campaign will manifest as a two-day livestream hosted by the Green brothers and as yet unannounced guests. Fans are invited to comment during the stream.

Past charities benefited by Project for Awesome include This Star Won’t Go Out, Child’s Play, Doctors Without Borders, and others.
