Another Funny or Die Production Gets a Shot with Comedy Central

/ Nov 22, 2013

The Funny or Die to Comedy Central pipeline is strong. The Viacom-owned network has ordered a pilot for “The Chris Gethard Show,” a NY-based weekly variety show from comedian Chris Gethard.

The hour-long show airs once a week on NY public access television and for a while now has been simulcast on Blip, which also offers it on demand. A local variety show in the strictest sense, each episode features various character bits from local NY comedians, music performances from local bands, and other segments that truly defy explanations. The show also on occasion brings in famous guests like Bobby Moynihan, Amy Poehler, John Mulaney, and Seth Meyers — “The Chris Gethard Show” comes out of the UCB Theatre ecosystem, which itself has very strong ties to those who make funny stuff for TV, particularly on NBC.

The pilot for Comedy Central is set up via Funny or Die, which already has two successful Comedy Central shows under its belt. The long-time web video producer’s “Drunk History” series was recently renewed for a second season, and its Chris Hardwick-hosted late-night program, [email protected],” was given a 40-week episode order.

Joining producer Funny or Die is Brillstein Entertainment Partners, which is co-producing. The pilot will be executive produced by Gethard and Zach Galifianakis alongside Funny or Die’s Will Ferrell, Adam McKay, Mike Farah, and Owen Burke.

Of note, Gethard was the star of “Big Lake,” a short-lived Comedy Central series produced by Ferrell and McKay. He also appeared in “The Other Guys,” a 2010 cop comedy directed by McKay and starring Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg.
