Anthony Weiner, Bill Murray to Appear in ‘Alpha House’ Season Finale

/ Jan 8, 2014

Disgraced former congressman Anthony Weiner is set to make a guest appearance in the season finale of “Alpha House,” the original political comedy series created by Garry Trudeau for Amazon Prime Instant Video. The final episode of the season will be made available this Friday, January 10.

Weiner’s not the only political bigwig set for a guest turn on the season finale. He will be joined by former GOP National Committee head Michael Steele. Former NBC News anchor Tom Brokaw and CNN analyst Jeffrey Toobin are also confirmed to play themselves in the episode.

This group of notable guest stars is rounded out by notorious prankster Bill Murray, who will return as jailed Senator Vernon Smits. Murray appeared in the first few minutes of the pilot episode of “Alpha House,” which is the first series to premiere out of Amazon Studios’ original programming initiative.

Critically, “Alpha House” has received positive reviews (though I personally was not a fan of the three episodes that I watched). Commercially, though, the show seems to be doing quite well. Shortly after its November 15 premiere, Amazon said “Alpha House” was the most-watched TV show on its video service. It’s still listed as one of the most popular TV shows on Amazon Prime Instant Video, alongside TV stalwarts like “Downton Abbey,” “Justified,” and “Duck Dynasty.”

If you’ve been living under a rock for the past year, “Alpha House” is a political comedy about four Republican senators who live in the same house. The show is created and produced by “Doonesbury” creator Garry Trudeau, and stars John Goodman, Clark Johnson, Matt Malloy, Cynthia Nixon, and Wanda Sykes. Amazon originally released the pilot last summer, and gave the show a greenlight after enough viewers watched, liked, and rated the show. It then premiered on November 15 with the first three episodes of the season (including the original pilot), all of which were made available for free. Since then, the remaining episodes have been released weekly exclusively to Prime subscribers.

Back to Weiner: You know his recent history, having twice been at the center of a sex(t) controversy. He should fit right in on a show about a bunch of irresponsible politicians.
