AOL Names New Head of Video; Ran Harnevo Exits

/ Oct 7, 2014

AOL has named Viacom executive Dermot McCormack its new president of video and AOL Studios, replacing outgoing video boss Ran Harnevo, who is leaving the company to pursue other opportunities.

Harnevo has been with AOL since 2010, when the company acquired his video startup 5min Media. Since then, he steered the growth of AOL’s video business, which now encompasses an original content division, a strong syndication business, and video advertising through the acquisition of

After his exit, Harnevo will remain with AOL to executive produce “Connected,” the company’s first long-form original series.

“AOL is now a top three player in video and we owe much of this success to exceptional leadership from Ran Harnevo and the team he developed,” said AOL CEO Tim Armstrong in a statement.

“AOL today has the largest global curated video network, a programmatic video platform that is the future of advertising, and a strong content creation strategy that has already received two Emmy nominations,” added Harnevo. “Dermot is the right person to lead AOL On forward and it’s time for me to return to my entrepreneurial roots.”

As AOL’s new head of video, McCormack will manage a business that includes the AOL On video network (spanning 14 channels), the Be On branded entertainment division, and AOL Studios, an in-house studio that oversees the AOL’s original programming. Splitting time between AOL’s New York and Beverly Hills offices, McCormack will report directly to Armstrong and Bob Lord, CEO of AOL Platforms (which oversees AOL On and Be On).

McCormack comes from Viacom, where he most recently ran the Viacom Music & Logo’s Connect Content Group. In that role, he led “all non-linear brand properties initiatives” for Viacom networks including MTV, VH1, CMT, and Logo. Prior to Viacom, he served as SVP of interactive product management at Cablevision.
