EXCLUSIVE: AOL Sets Sail with Carnival Cruise, George Lopez on New Series

AOL has partnered with Carnival Cruise Line on a branded comedy series to highlight various features, activities, and services available to those who choose to take a trip on the cruise line.

Called “Laughs on Deck,” the series follows comedian George Lopez, who serves as the cruise line’s official “curator of comedy,” as he goes undercover on three Carnival cruise ships and interacts with unsuspecting vacationers. During the series, Lopez assumes multiple roles aboard that ship, including sushi chef, bartender, recreation director, and parade leader.

“When I started as creative director of comedy for Carnival’s Punchliner Comedy Clubs, the goal was to showcase the most hilarious comedians at sea to guests on board,” said Lopez in a statement. “‘Laughs on Deck’ takes that a step beyond by bringing laughs straight to the vacationers.”

The first two episodes of “Laughs on Deck” are available immediately on a custom page on AOL On, with four more scheduled to roll out in the coming weeks.

The series expands on an existing relationship between AOL and Carnival Cruise Lines, which is the exclusive sponsor for “Laugh Lessons with Kevin Nealon,” a comedy series that debuted earlier this fall as part of AOL’s 2014 original programming slate.

“This was a concept that evolved as we were talking to Carnival about ‘Laugh Lessons,’” says Tariq Walker, VP of creative development and branded entertainment for AOL. “Our conversation naturally led us in the direction of creating a companion Be On series that tapped into the same vein of humor and integrated Carnival and the cruise experience in a way that was engaging and funny.”

When discussing ideas for a Carnival-branded series, Walker says AOL and Carnival enlisted the help of Lopez, who gave input on potential concepts and formats.

“Laughs on Deck” comes out of AOL’s Be On division, which was formed in 2013 to produce original content for brand partners. The show itself was produced by AOL Studios.
