Beachfront Bakes Social Video Discovery App into MetroPCS, Cricket (Exclusive)

/ Oct 15, 2013

Beachfront Media, a builder of mobile video apps for brands, TV networks, and YouTube MCNs, is integrating its video-search and sharing app, Social Video Pulse, into MetroPCS and Cricket’s wireless networks.

Per the deals, the Social Video Pulse is accessible via each carrier’s mobile web portals and smartphone app stores. The technology is also baked into both wireless networks, making the video discovery service the de facto video-search engine for subscribers.

Social Video Pulse pulls in the top trending videos from the web by tapping into MeFeedia, a video-discovery service that also happens to be owned by Beachfront Media. Thanks to that link with MeFeedia, Social Video Pulse offers access to “millions” of videos from over 33,000 English and Spanish content sources.

Why Spanish content, you ask? According to Frank Sinton, CEO of Beachfront Media, says roughly half of MetroPCS’ 9 million subscribers are Hispanic. With that in mind, the Social Video Pulse app offers a button, which allows users to shift to searching for and watching Spanish-focused content.

Beachfront Media, through its platform, handles all advertising and operational aspects of the app. With respect to its deals with MetroPCS and Cricket, Beachfront offers the operators a cut of all ad-revenue generated from the app, regardless of whether the stream was recorded via the carrier’s wireless network or a Wi-Fi connection. Sinton declined to discuss what the exact split is, though he added it’s “similar” to what you see in web video.

He added that rev-share is also determined by the actual piece of content, and which source it’s coming from. The company’s deals with content owners vary based on how big and important the content provider is. “The rights are specific to each content provider,” said Sinton. “Generally the bigger the rights-owner, the more restrictive the rights.” It makes sense; Hulu, which is one of the sources MeFeedia and Social Video Pulse is plugged into, is likely more restrictive than, say, content creators on YouTube.

Similar to other mobile video apps, Social Video Pulse allows users to save clips to a “watchlist” and share them across Facebook and Twitter. Beyond MetroPCS and Cricket, the app is also available on Google Play.
