Chinese Digital Video Leader Youku Tudou Releasing 20 New Shows

Chinese online video giant Youku Tudou is releasing over 20 original programs and series that will roll out over the second half of 2014. New programs will include reality shows, drama series, and talk shows.

This marks an overall effort for Youku Tudou to further emphasize its in-house production capabilities, the company said. All of the new content will have a presence on social media platforms and will be optimized for e-commerce online and on smartphones.

Release of the new shows kicked off earlier this June with “Searching Divas,” a reality show that pits contestants against one another in the completion of difficult tasks with the ultimate prize of getting to meet their favorite Chinese celebrities. Four talk shows, including “Logical Thinking” and “Macroview,” have also been released thus far on the network.

Drama series “Tiny Times,” a web-show based on a hit feature film taking place in modern day China that follows young, upwardly mobile citizens, will debut in July, possibly also making its way to TV in the future.

Zhu Xiangyang, chief content officer at Youku Tudou, believes that creating a “multi-screen entertainment ecosystem is one of our most important strategic initiatives.” Wei Ming, the company’s president, elaborated, “Via traditional television programming combined with the internet, we are continuing to promote an entirely new industry chain that will redefine China’s online entertainment space.”

Already, Youku Tudou’s in-house production has been responsible for unique web content like the programs “Hip Hop Quartets,” “Old Boys,” “On the Road,” and “Surprise.” Overall, the company captivates over 70% of Chinese digital video viewers, according to data from the China Internet Network Information Center.
