DCNF: Conde Nast to Launch More Than 100 Shows in 2014, Building a Hub for ‘Digital-First’ Programming
Ahead of its 2014 Newfront presentation, we already knew that Conde Nast Entertainment had renewed 21 original series from its 2013 programming slate. But that’s just a fraction of what Conde Nast’s video division is planning for the coming year.
CNE — on a “mission to develop television, film, and digital video content with the same exceptional quality our [magazine] brands are known for,” per CNE president Dawn Ostroff — plans to launch more than 100 shows across a video network that will expand to 14 channels by year-end.
Ostroff made this announcement at CNE’s Newfront presentation in New York, which was attended by advertisers and, interestingly, a crop of top YouTube talent — Taryn Southern, Bethany Mota, Erica Domesek, Jordan Reed, and Laura Vitale. Since launching its network last year, CNE has been active about working with the YouTube community, and has worked on video and series projects some of the creators on that list.
The coming year is supposed to be a big one for CNE. “This year we’ll generate over 1 billion views,” Ostroff predicted. (CNE is currently on track to surpass its first billion in May.)
To make it happen, the division is planning to add to its distribution portfolio to more than 25 outlets. The network currently spans AOL, Yahoo, Dailymotion, YouTube, and over 20 other video outlets.
New channels coming to the video network this year include those for Bon Appetit, Lucky, and The New Yorker.
For a selection of shows that will be available on those channels, as well as the 11 that already exist, the list is below.
On top of all this, CNE is also looking to create a new online video hub for “digital-first” content, whether that’s produced by CNE or third-party content partners. The hub is called The Scene, and it will launch in July.
“As it turns out, a home for CNE [programming] addresses a need in the marketplace and answers a simple question: where do you go for premium video content?” said CNE chief digital officer Fred Santarpia.
Digital series will get first billing, added Santarpia, and won’t get lost in the noise of TV clips, sports highlights, and an “avalanche” of other content that crowed other video platforms like YouTube.
Outside of original content produced for CNE brands, the division will also create content specifically for The Scene.
Third-party content partners include ABC News, BuzzFeed, Major League Soccer, Weather Channel Films, Variety, and YouTube comedy network Jash. “When combined with our brands, these partners will give The Scene the scope and depth of the best digital storytelling in a single unified experience,” said Santarpia.

1 Item 3 Ways – Viewers will learn how to take the seasonal food item of the moment and reinvent it in three unique and delicious recipes.
What’s In Your Bag? – Comedian Mike Kenton plays the most comically intrusive and revealing game with the residents of New York City – what’s in their grocery bags.
Epicuriousity – This visually lush and compelling docu-series explores the trends and personalities at the forefront of the artisanal food and wine movement in America.
