Collective Digital Studio Acquires UK Reality Show for Metacafe
Ever since Collective Digital Studio bought Metacafe in the summer of 2012, the company has been looking to build the site up as a place for people to watch premium content from inside and outside the multi-channel network.
As first reported by Deadline, CDS has acquired the rights to stream “Release the Hounds,” a horror-themed reality-competition series from across the pond, in all territories outside of the UK and the Middle East.
The reality show has a pretty novel concept: Contestants are tasked with going into a forest to find chests full of cash. While doing so, they have to deal with and evade a bunch of scary elements, from deserted cabins to a pack of hounds trained to guard the treasure. It aired this week in the UK as a one-time hour-long program on ITV2.
Now, CDS is taking the show and plans to re-cut into 10-minute segments, which will be available on Metacafe. The show will also be available on BlackBoxTV, a horror-themed YouTube channel formed via a joint venture between Collective Digital Studio, “CSI” creator Anthony Zuiker, and director Tony Valenzuela (who is repped by CDS).
“Release the Hounds” comes from Gogglebox, a UK-based production company run by Adam Wood and Mat Steiner. Sony Pictures Television International holds a minority stake in the company.
Update: Per Cynopsis Digital, Crackle, which is owned by Sony Pictures Television, will have exclusive SVOD rights to “Release the Hounds.”
