Comedy Central Gives CC:Studios’ ‘This Is Not Happening’ Series Order

Comedy Central is taking Ari Shaffir’s online comedy show, “This Is Not Happening,” to the network.

The show, which is based on Shaffir’s long-running live stand-up show, is hosted by Shaffir and features a rotating group of comedians recounting hilarious true stories in front of a live audience at the LA gentlemen’s club Cheetahs. Past guests have included the likes of David Koechner, Natasha Leggero, TJ Miller, Kumail Nanjiani, Steve Rannazzisi, and Joe Rogan.

The web version of “This Is Not Happening” was developed by Shaffir and CC:Studios, Comedy Central’s in-house creative and production unit for original digital content. It ran for two seasons on the web.

Now it will move to Comedy Central, which has ordered an eight-episode season that will premiere this fall. It marks the first time Comedy Central has picked up a show developed by CC:Studios.

That said, this isn’t the first time Comedy Central has greenlit a TV version of a popular web series. The network is home to “Broad City” and “Drunk History,” and last November ordered a pilot for “The Chris Gethard Show,” which has been airing on Blip and local public-access television in NY for quite some time.

“The only reason we are picking up ‘This Is Not Happening’ is to prove we can incubate an idea digitally and then have it migrate to the linear channel,” said Kent Alterman, president of content development and original programming for Comedy Central, in a statement. “And also, it’s really funny storytelling with fantastic talent.”

“This Is Not Happening” will be executive produced by Shaffir, Eric Abrams, Sam Saifer, and Jeff Tomsic, who is also directing.

Shaffir is repped by The Gersh Agency and Sam Saifer Management.
