Crackle Premieres Jeremy Renner-Produced Movie ‘The Throwaways’

/ Jan 30, 2015

Crackle has premiered “The Throwaways,” an original feature film executive produced by Jeremy Renner.

Written by Michael Arlen Ross (“Turistas”) and directed by Sundance winner Tony Bui (“Three Seasons”), “The Throwaways” is described as a “comedic international cyber-spy thriller.” It follows the exploits of a notorious hacker named Drew Reynolds, who is captured by the CIA and given an ultimatum to either work for them or spend the rest of his life in jail. He agrees on the condition that he gets to pick his team, who then help him track down a cyber-terrorist.

The film stars James Caan, Kevin Dillon, Sam Huntington, Katie McGrath, Christian Hillborg, and Jack Kesy. It’s produced by Jeffery Beach, Phillip Roth, and executive produced by Timothy Linh Bui (“Green Dragon”) and Renner a Don Handfield through their productino company The Combine.

First announced during Crackle’s Newfront last spring, “The Throwaways” was delayed after Crackle’s parent company, Sony Pictures Entertainment, suffered a massive cyber-attack last fall. The film’s plot hit a little close to home, and the company chose to delay the release until January.

Usually, I’m not very critical of movies but tonight I have to let the truth come out. I’m surprised this online movie came from these producers and actors and writers. Take away the few swear words and crude references to “swallow”, this movie would be nothing more than a made for broadcast TV movie for a Tuesday night. Meaning, kind of boring. The premise of the movie, hacker gets caught, go to jail or work for CIA, misfits band together to avert a disaster, hack a hacker bad guy, save the world, been there, done that. Let’s start with the characters. Kevin Dillon, best part of the movie. If it weren’t for his humor I would have stopped watching. James Caan, if you’re going to make this into a series, please give him more dialog. We all know what he can do, let him do it. Sam Huntington, cute as a geek when he was a kid, not believable as an adult. Why does the geek always get paired up with the beautiful badass hot agent? Her character, typical teen male attractant, but you’re gonna have to use someone younger of that’s your audience. Dmitri, no. Just no. Come on guys. I’m disappointed that you all were okay with even releasing this. Maybe it’s SONY’s fault. Maybe they wanted to get on the band wagon too soon and put something sloppy together. Unless the writing gets better to give the characters more depth than the stupid misfit secret agent types, don’t make this into a series, online, or anywhere. Oh, by the way, Bulgaria? Please don’t bring back the cold war. War Games was so 80’s.
