Creator of ‘I Hate Being Single’ Teams with CDS to Crowdfund Season Two

/ Jan 30, 2014

The creator behind “I Hate Being Single” hopes to make a second season.

From writer-director Rob Michael Hugel, “I Hate Being Single” tells the story of a twenty-something (played by Hugel) as he tries to navigate the Williamsburg (Brooklyn) dating scene.

To make a second season a reality, Hugel has partnered with Collective Digital Studio, a MCN and talent-management firm that’s not a stranger to crowdfunding, to launch an Indiegogo campaign. The fundraising goal is $15,000, and if completed, Hugel will look to release an eight-episode second season of “I Hate Being Single” in spring 2014.

As it’s planned now, season two will star Hugel, alongside Shannon Coffey and Dom Manzolillo. Hugel, Coffey, and Manzolillo, as well as other people slated to appear during the second season, come out of NY’s Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre community. Coffey’s YouTube channel*, Random Ass Girly Channel, currently reaches more than 10,000 subscribers.

There’s another link between CDS and Hugel outside of the crowdfunding element. CDS manages the Improv Everywhere channel. The prank-comedy troupe is based in New York, and its leader, Charlie Todd, is a regular performer and teacher at the UCB Theatre. Two doesn’t make a trend, but interesting to see CDS working even more with the UCB community, which, if you’ve been following recent “SNL” casting news, is growing in prominence.

That’s also not the only news from Hugel. The writer-director is also launching a new show on “I Hate Being Single”’s YouTube channel called “Man vs. Waiter.” The six-part series, written and directed by Hugel, follows his character from “I Hate Being Single.” In the show, Hugel’s character has to deal with an annoying, nosey, and condescending waiter throughout a dinner date. The series also stars Kate Costello (CollegeHumor) and Zack Phillips (UCB, The Onion).

From 2009-2010, Hugel served as the primary director, editor, and co-writer of “Broad City,” a cult web series that just premiered as a TV show on Comedy Central.

* Coffey previously ran the Coffey Chat channel for My Damn Channel on YouTube, which has more than 21,000 subscribers. After this story was published, Coffey notified us that she no longer oversees Coffey Chat, running into a situation similar to what Grace Helbig went through with My Damn Channel (this is also noted in the comment made below). Coffey left My Damn Channel in October.
