CW Seed Unveils Summer Programming Lineup
Digital studio CW Seed has unveiled its summer programming lineup, which includes a “Veronica Mars” spin-off called “Play It Again, Dick,” and a companion series for the TV version of “Backpackers,” called “The Real Backpackers.”
The programming push begins with the launch of CW Seed’s newest original, “LA Rangers,” a show about wannabe filmmakers working as park rangers in LA’s Griffith Park. Created by and starring “Hart of Dixie” star Wilson Bethel, each episode of “LA Rangers” follows Bethel and his partner in crime-fighting, played by director Dugan O’Neal, as their boring lives are transformed into epic movie adventures across genres, from westerns to science fiction and anime.
The series was produced by Bethel and O’Neal, and is sponsored by Samsung Galaxy S5.
“Play It Again, Dick” will star Ryan Hansen as himself, as he pleads with his former “Veronica Mars” castmates to help him get his character, Dick Casablancas, his own spin-off show, according to CW Seed.
The very meta series was co-written and executive produced by Rob Thomas, creator and executive producer of “Veronica Mars.” It will include guest appearances from some of the cult TV show’s stars.
Then there’s the previously announced “The Real Backpackers,” a travel-reality show that will serve as a companion to The CW’s “Backpackers.” In the companion, guide Annie Unnold will travel to the same locations as her fictional “Backpackers” counterparts and showcase the best places to eat, drink, and party, from Europe to Canada.
“Backpackers,” produced by Canada-based Smokebomb Entertainment, started out as a web series on CW Seed, before being picked up by CW as a half-hour TV show.
Other new programming coming to CW Seed this summer include:
“Whose Line Is It Minis”: Special mini-episodes of the improv comedy franchise “Whose Line Is It Anyway?” The two-minute webisodes will feature exclusive scenes, bloopers, and outtakes.
Untitled project from “Gossip Girl” creators Alloy Entertainment: A digital comedy series about two best friends and roommates whose lives get complicated when one of them starts dating the other’s recently single mom. The project is written by Richard Keith and Erin Cardillo, and executive produced by Alloy’s Leslie Morgenstein and Tripp Reed.
“The Kelly Cutrone Project”: As previously announced, the digital talk show, hosted by the “America’s Next Top Model” judge, will tackle everything from fashion to pop culture, as well as “the things your mother never wanted to tell you,” according to CW Seed. Show is executive produced by Cutrone alongside Liz Gately and Tony DiSanto in association with DiGa Productions.
In addition to the new programming slate, CW Seed will also debut new episodes for returning series like “Husbands,” “The PET Squad Files,” “CelebTV on the CW,” and “Very Mallory.”Tags: Backpackers, CW, CW Seed, Kelly Cutrone, Veronica Mars
