Discovery Channel Founder John Hendricks Launches CuriosityStream SVOD Service
Focusing on factual and non-fiction content, the ad-free service is initially available in the US, with a global rollout planned over the next five years. It’s available at three different price points, all based on streaming quality: $2.99 per month for standard resolution; $5.99 per month for HD resolution; and soon a 4K option, for which pricing has not yet been set. A free one-month trial comes with the service.
At launch, CuriosityStream offers “hundreds” of hours of programming, including original series, specials, and documentaries from producers such as the BBC, NHK, ZED, Terra Noa, and Flame Distribution. The service also offers exclusive segments and interviews with more than 70 world experts across a range of subjects, from evolution to rock stars. Twenty-five interviews will be added every month going forward, said Curiosity Project, the venture behind the streaming service.
While much of what’s available on the service is long-form, short-form content (generally running for eight minutes or less) will also be a “significant” part of the CuriosityStream library.
Heading up programming for CuriosityStream is Emmy-winning documentary producer Steve Burns. He comes from National Geographic Channels, where he served as EVP of global content.
Former ABC News producer Richard Sergay is on board as host of “Curiosity Studios,” and a senior consultant for the service’s partnerships and acquisitions.
Here’s a selection of programming available at launch:
