‘District 9’ Star Sharlto Copley to Lead PlayStation’s ‘Powers’
The star of “District 9,” Sharlto Copley, has joined the cast of “Powers,” an upcoming original drama produced by Sony Pictures Television for the PlayStation.
Adapted from Brian Michael Bendis and Michael Avon Oeming’s graphic novel series of the same name, “Powers” follows two detectives who investigate crimes committed by or involving beings with superhero-like abilities — referred to as “powers” in the show.
The project, which was originally developed for FX, is targeted to debut on the PlayStation Network in December.
Copley will play the lead detective, Christian Walker, described as a charismatic man who once had super powers, only to lose them in a battle with a super-human mass murderer. He now uses his unique perspective to investigate crimes in the community.
He will be joined by Michelle Forbes (“The Killing”), who has been cast as Retro Girl, one of the most popular superheroes in that universe. Her character is described as an icon of justice, selflessness, and business acumen.
Previously announced cast members include Eddie Izzard, who will play the show’s Big Bad, Noah Taylor (“Game of Thrones”), Adam Godley (“Suits”), Olesya Rulin (“Greek”), and Max Fowler (“The Killing”).
Sony picked up the drama in March and ordered it straight to series. The 10-episode first season is written by Charlie Huston. David Slade (“Hannibal”) will direct the first two episodes.Tags: Casting, Crime, Drama, Eddie Izzard, Michelle Forbes, PlayStation, playstation network, powers, Sharlto Copley, Sony Pictures Television
