Endemol Beyond Launches eSports Channel to Crown Ultimate Gamer

The UK arm of Endemol’s digital channels network, Endemol Beyond, has launched Legends of Gaming, a new eSports channel fronted by YouTube gamer Ali A.

At the center of the Legends of Gaming channel will be a new multi-stage gaming-competition series of the same name, which is set to premiere later this September. Featuring both up-and-coming and established YouTube stars, the “Legends of Gaming” show will seek to crown the ultimate online gamer.

It all begins with a “next generation” tournament for up-and-coming gamers, which will run from September to December. This will be followed by the “Elite” tournament, which will begin in early 2015 and feature top YouTube gamers.

While Endemol hasn’t disclosed the specific competition format, it said the channel and series will “stand apart” from other eSports competitions by focusing on all gaming genres. Contestants will also be encouraged to dress up and play as their “alter egos,” who will be based on their online personas.

Star gamer Ali A, who reaches more than 5.5 million subscribers across two YouTube channels, will serve as host for both stages of “League of Legends.” He will provide commentary on the contests, and is also tasked with compiling highlight reels, countdowns, and news-and-review pieces to accompany the primary gameplay content.

This will all culminate in “League of Legends Live,” a four-day gaming expo scheduled to take place next September in London.

“Legends of Gaming is a perfect example of how Endemol is developing new kinds of properties and talent with fantastic potential across platforms including YouTube, live events, television, and more,” said Laurence Jones, commercial director of Endemol UK, in a statement. “In doing so we’re delivering unique opportunities for brands and advertisers to achieve long term engagement with a young and passionate fan base.”
