Fandor Dives into Original Content — via Kickstarter

/ Mar 13, 2015

Fandor "films glorious films"

Fandor, a subscription streaming site for independent and international films, wants to do original programming, too — and it plans to use crowdfunding site Kickstarter to make it happen.

The company has launched FIXShorts, a new program that will give filmmakers from Fandor’s FIX community the chance to develop, finance, and distribute original short films — with help from Fandor along the entire process.

As part of the program, Fandor promises to commit 50% of the short film’s originating budget, provide reward benefits for the individual Kickstarter campaigns, guarantee distribution on its streaming service, and assist in marketing and outreach efforts.

The first slate of FIXshorts campaigns launched this week on Kickstarter. The films, which span the narrative, animation, and documentary genres, are as follows:

“Anyuka” (Animated Documentary)

Director: Maya Erdelyi

An animated documentary on the life of the filmmaker’s grandmother and her journey to America.

“Dead Ink Archive” (Narrative)

Director: David Schendel

Set in 1975, a janitor has a secret that he cannot share until he collects all of the discarded scraps of paper from a theatre floor.

“Discontinuity” (Narrative)

Director: Lori Felker

A couple have been separated from each other for many months and they do not know what they’ve been missing.

“He Who Eats Children” (Documentary)

Director: Ben Russell

A speculative portrait of a Dutch hermit living in the Surinamese jungle.

“Sea to Shining Sea” (Narrative)

Director: Maximon Monihan

Two friends drive across the country from California to New York, finally experiencing the glory of the USA.

For Fandor, the crowdfunding component of the program ensures a built-in audience for each film. That said, the company says the rights to each film will remain with the individual filmmaker, and that it will work with each artist to debut their short in tandem with whatever festival premieres they’ve secured.

Fandor says it plans to support the FIXshorts program twice annually, with the second round of proposals under consideration near the end of 2015.
