Fine Bros. Get Retro With ‘Freaks & Geeks’ Interactive YouTube Game

/ Oct 3, 2013

The 80s cult TV classic “Freaks & Geeks” is back. Okay, maybe it isn’t back in the way Gen X-ers hoped it’d be, but an interactive YouTube game is still pretty cool.

Freaks & Geeks: Interactive Game” is the latest installment from The Fine Bros. line of “interactive retro-content,” which in the past has included “Saved by the Bell” and the “Twilight: Eclipse” 8-bit game. Both interactive videos reached well over the one million view mark since their respective releases in 2010 and 2011.

The game/video/piece of nostalgia works like this: There is one main story, which is later dictated by the choices you, the viewer, pick. In one of the game’s first interactive encounters, you are tasked with picking (clicking on) one of two choices. Think of it like a “Goosebumps” choose your own adventure book, only much less horrifying, in a totally different format, and with far fewer options. Whatever you pick — in this case A or B — will then direct you to a new video, which acts as a new branch of the main story.

According to the brothers, there are 15 total videos in the series, which play (or don’t) depending on your choices.

The Fine Bros. are launching the interactive YouTube game in two installments — “Freak” mode and “Geek” mode. As of now, only “Freak” mode is available. However, ever the innovators, Benny and Rafi Fine are also launching a YouTube “Expansion Pack” in one month, which will put you behind the reins of Sam Weir as he navigates an entirely different story.

The game is written by The Fine Bros. with music and animation by longtime collaborator Doctor Octoroc.

This isn’t the Fine Bros. first foray into interactive and innovative entertainment models. Popular original YouTube series MyMusic, which the brothers write and direct, breaks the fourth wall giving each character in the show a social media account on Twitter. With this, fans can interact with the characters outside of the scripted show further deepening the audiences experience and level of engagement. The Fine Bros. are consistently pushing YouTube as a platform by not only creating entertaining content but also encouraging audiences to adopt a more active approach to how they consume it.
