Former Machinima Exec Ian Moffitt Joins Originals Team at Yahoo (Updated)
Veteran online video executive Ian Moffitt, formerly of Machinima and BermanBraun, has joined Yahoo’s video team. According to multiple industry sources, Moffitt will lead Yahoo’s original content team that’s based in Santa Monica.
UPDATE: In an email, a Yahoo spokesperson has confirmed the hiring of Moffitt, who has joined the company to help “expand and support” its original video initiatives.
Most recently, Moffitt was the head of premium content at the gaming/fanboy multi-channel network Machinima. There, he was responsible for commissioning, marketing, and scheduling premium programming for Machinima’s network, with a particular focus on comedy and drama formats.
Prior to Machinima, Moffitt was the head of digital video at BermanBraun (now known as Whalerock Industries) and SVP of scripted programming and business development at BBC Worldwide Productions.
Moffitt’s hiring comes at a time when Yahoo is planning to move its original video operations to the West Coast, with most of the creative based in the company’s offices in Santa Monica.
With Yahoo increasing its investment in original video programming in the past six months, the move to LA makes sense. In addition to announcing two all-new half-hour comedy series from producers Mike Tollins and Paul Feig during its 2014 DCNF presentation, Yahoo also swooped in at the last minute to resurrect the cult-hit “Community” for a sixth season.
There’s also a slight shuffle going on within Yahoo’s video business. Moffitt’s hiring follows the news that Bonnie Pan, most recently the company’s global head of programming and audience development, was joining the senior executive team at Maker Studios.Tags: BBC Worldwide Productions, BermanBraun, Exec Moves, Ian Moffitt, Machinima, MCN, Movers, Whalerock Industries, Yahoo!
