Freddie Wong Breaks Record, Raises $900K for Final Season of ‘VGHS’

/ Feb 24, 2014

In news that shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone, Freddie Wong has exceeded his goal for crowdfunding the third and final season of “Video Game High School.” Launching the campaign on January 23, Wong had hoped to raise $750,000 on Indiegogo to help finish the story he and co-creator Matt Arnold began two years ago. The campaign finished with more than $900,000 in fan-contributed money — a new record for a web series*.

The final season will finish multiple plot lines from the first two, including the romance between the two main characters: Brian D and Jenny. Other threads involving characters like Ted, fan-favorite The Law, and Ki will also come to a close, as Wong and Arnold hope to end the story in a “blaze of glory.”

The third season will be directed by Wong and Matt Arnold, with a writing staff that includes Will Campos, Brian Firenzi, and Jake Andrews.

Production will begin in March. Expect it to show up on YouTube and later this year, with distribution to other outlets including Netflix a few months after that.

The first two seasons of “VGHS” were partially funded by fans via Kickstarter. Wong moved to Indiegogo for the final season, mainly because of his international audience, which would require PayPal to make a contribution, which is something Indiegogo allows and Kickstarter doesn’t.

Wong is repped by Collective Digital Studio.

* To continue this discussion of online programming semantics that we began months and months ago: “Web series” is a loose term here — “VGHS” is a TV show, no matter what some other outlets would like to tell you.
