Freddie Wong Talks Future of Online Video with ‘What’s Trending’

Freddie Wong is one of the most thoughtful dudes on YouTube — it’s evident whenever he’s asked to share his thoughts on the online video ecosystem. Which is exactly what Shira Lazar of “What’s Trending” asked him to do when Wong visited the set of the live talk show in the Samsung Smart Lounge at the International CES.

When asked what he foresees for the online video industry in 2014, Wong described the economics of making a living off of creating content for YouTube. Simply, Wong notes how YouTube’s current infrastructure is able to support a certain tier of content — things like vlogs and gaming videos, which don’t require large production costs, and can be monetized effectively using YouTube advertising.

What Wong is personally interested in is what will happen with the tier of content (we can refer to it as “premium”/TV-like) that the YouTube infrastructure can’t currently support by itself. “The question is, if you want to do a level of content that requires a little more production, that requires a little more budget, where does that live and how do you support yourself on it? Because the advertising side of it is not quite there yet on the online side. So it’ll be interesting to see, because I think that’s [online video] kind of where the future is, that’s where a lot of interesting things are happening.”

It’s an issue that obviously hits close to home with Wong, who distributed the second season of “Video Game High School” as a six episode, TV-length series both on and off YouTube.
