Netflix blasts Comcast and Verizon on net neutrality: ‘some big ISPs are extracting a toll’

Last month Netflix decided it would pay off huge internet service providers like Comcast to make its service better for customers, but it’s clear that the popular streaming company doesn’t want to be forced to cut similar deals in the future. In a measured and strongly worded article issued today, Netflix CEO Reed Hastings says that “net neutrality must be defended and strengthened,” calling out giants like Comcast and Verizon for bad behavior.

Netflix Will Exclusively Air ‘Fargo’ Miniseries in the Netherlands

If you want to watch “Fargo,” the TV miniseries inspired by the Oscar-winning film from the Coen brothers, in the US, you will be able to do so on FX, where it premieres on April 15. However, if you happen to be in the Netherlands, and are also excited to watch the show, then you’re going to need a Netflix subscription.

Netflix has also acquired the streaming rights to mockumentary comedy Short Poppies. The series’ eight episodes are created by and star HBO‘s Flight of the Conchords‘ Rhys Darby. It is set to premiere on April 3 for U.S., Canada, U.K. and Ireland subscribers.

Machinima Unleashes ‘Enormous,’ a Short Film It’s Testing for a Series Order

Machinima has launched a new short film on YouTube with the hopes of turning it into a scripted online series, pending audience approval. “Enormous” is based on the acclaimed graphic novel of the same name, which is set in a post-apocalyptic world where humans are preyed on by giant insect-like beasts. The novel is written by Tim Daniel with illustrations by Mehdi Cheggour.



Music Labels Make More Money From Mashups Than Official Videos

According to the annual Digital Music Report released this week by the IFPI, an organisation that represents 1,300 music publishing companies around the world, the recording industry is making more money from fan-made mashups, lip-syncs and tributes on YouTube than from official music videos. The report also states that overall digital revenues for the industry grew from $4 billion in 2008 to $5.9 billion in 2013, with a 51.3% increase in subscription streaming revenues year on year. That’s good news for the global music industry, that saw a decline in revenues of 3.9 per cent to about $15 billion.
