For Digital Content Providers, Verizon’s Web-TV Service Is the One to Watch

For digital media companies and content creators, Verizon’s upcoming internet-TV service might be the one to watch.

Verizon is one of multiple companies currently developing a cable-like TV service that would be delivered completely over the web, allowing users to subscribe to and watch their favorite TV channels on a slew of digital devices. Other companies at work on such a service include Sony, which just struck a deal yesterday to carry 22 Viacom channels, and Dish Network, which has similar carriage deals with Disney and A+E Networks.

Opinions & Analysis

Facebook Tries to Muscle In on YouTube

In what may be another signal that Facebook Inc. wants to take on YouTube, the company has reached out to some of the Google Inc.-owned video site’s biggest content producers and encouraged them to test distributing their videos on the social network, say people familiar with the matter.

Already some YouTube content producers, including Walt Disney Co. Maker Studios and Collective Digital Studio, have experimented with putting some of their top YouTube series on Facebook. Collective has made available its animated viral hit “The Annoying Orange” on the social network, for example. The videos are being delivered to Facebook users via the social network’s news feed and on individual creator’s pages.

The good news for YouTube is that according to eMarketer, its U.S ad revenues will total $1.13 billion this year, and it will account for 18.9% of the video ad market.

The bad news is that eMarketer says its share of the market will not move for awhile.

HBO, Showtime Getting Closer to Offering Standalone Apps

Netflix’s chief content officer Ted Sarandos once stated that the goal for Netflix is “to become HBO faster than HBO can become us.” The only way this is likely to happen is if HBO decides to untether its HBO Go service from its cable package and offer it directly to consumers.

Right now, that’s highly unlikely. Financially speaking, it simply doesn’t make sense for HBO to. The premium network receives free marketing and other services from its pay-TV partners in exchange for splitting revenues generated by monthly subscriptions — and that’s not even factoring that in order for customers to have the ability to subscribe to HBO, they have to first pay for a whole host of other channels.

The Haps With Apps

Videos Are Coming to the App Store: Tips for Marketers and Developers

With more than 1.2 million iOS apps now available in the App Store, many developers struggle to stand out from the crowd. They have long used videos to build awareness for their app outside the App Store, but to woo potential users inside the store, their medium has been simple text and static screenshots.

Apple is changing all that with the launch of iOS 8. App developers can now upload a 30-second video to iTunes Connect, along with their other marketing materials and app updates. On September 17, App Store visitors will start seeing thumbnails of these videos (Apple calls them poster frames) alongside the screenshots for each app.

(The number represents revenues generated from ads running on the site’s video clips, and does not account for banners, search, and other types of ads.)
