GQ Debuts Sports Documentary Series on the Effects of Concussions

/ Nov 18, 2013

Conde Nast Entertainment has premiered a documentary series on GQ’s video channel that chronicles the impact of concussion-filled careers on a group of retired pro football players.

Casualties of the Gridiron” will follow six former football players — New York Jets quarterback Ray Lucas, San Francisco linebacker Terry Tautolo, Minnesota Vikings guard Brent Boyd, Tampa Bay Buccaneers center Randy Grimes, Washington Redskins wide receiver Charlie Brown, and Army fullback Gene Merlino — and shine a spotlight on their struggles with physical, psychological, and emotional pain as they seek to overcome the aftereffects of concussions. Helping them along with the way is a treatment facility called P.A.S.T. (Pain Alternatives Solutions and Treatments).

Told in eight parts, CNE will debut new episodes of the series on Mondays and Thursdays through December 19. The show will be available on’s video page, the GQ channel on YouTube, and across CNE syndication partners like AOL On and Dailymotion.

“Quality original content engages audiences and drives conversation whether you watch it in the theater, on your television, or on your computer or mobile device,” said Dawn Ostroff, President, Conde Nast Entertainment, in a statement. “Conde Nast Entertainment will deliver ‘Casualties of the Gridiron’ across our digital platforms to ensure that this in-depth look at one of the most critical issues affecting too many professional football players today is available to the widest audience possible.”

CNE will also ensure that this documentary series is available everywhere possible because its the company’s first attempt at bringing a traditional documentary format to web video. Ever since naming Michael Klein as the new EVP of program and content strategy, CNE has had an eye toward producing more TV-like (read: longer, higher quality) content for its growing digital video network. With “Casualties of the Gridiron,” CNE hopes to replicate the success TV programmers like HBO and ESPN have had in documentary filmmaking.

“Casualties of the Gridiron” is directed by Isaac Solotaroff of Endeavor Films, and co-directed by Jesse Handsher of Bywater Films. Both Endeavor and Bywater serve as producers of the show in partnership with CNE and GQ. The series is also executive produced by Solotaroff and Jennifer Smith, a case manager at P.A.S.T.
