Here’s How Streaming Video Platform Twitch Will Work on Next-Gen Consoles

/ Nov 20, 2013

Gamer-centric video platform Twitch is all set to arrive fully loaded in the upcoming Xbox One. With the console’s release impending, Microsoft recently detailed how Twitch will be integrated into the Xbox One.

As expected, Twitch on Xbox One will allow users to view the video platform’s extensive library of content from thousands of “broadcasters” — Twitch’s version of YouTube partners. While the Playstation 4 allows all online users to watch streaming gameplay content, Xbox One will require that users be Gold Members (paying customers) before watching live streams.

Additionally, the video platform — as it currently does on Twitch.TV — will support live streamming coverage of eSports events as well as content from Machinima, who recently partnered with Twitch.

Twitch on Xbox One will also support “Snap,” which allows users to perform two functions at once, such as watching a broadcaster’s video while playing a game yourself.

Of course this wouldn’t be a console story without the mention of at least a few achievements. Keeping up with the popular trend of offering achievements to gamers who complete certain tasks in game, Twitch is also rolling out achievements for users who watch via Xbox One in specific or special circumstances. According to Microsoft, the achievements will be:

– Watch one hour of live video on Twitch to become a Newcomer

– Watch 10 hours of live video on Twitch for Competitive

– Watch 100 hours of live video on Twitch for Best Viewer

– Watch one hour of live video on Twitch channels that have less than 10 viewers to be the Hipster

– Watch 10 hours of live video on Twitch channels that have less than 10 viewers and become theTalent Scout

– Max Bandwidth is received by watching a single channel on Twitch for more than eight hours consecutively

– Around The Clock is exactly that, just watch at least one minute of live video on Twitch in each hour of a full day

– Prime Time, simply: watch a total of 10 hours of live video on Twitch between peak viewing hours from 7:30 to 11:30 p.m., on a weekday

Although Xbox One is hitting shelves on November 22, Twitch won’t be available at launch. According to Microsoft, it should roll out sometime in early 2014.

Both Xbox One and PS4 will support Twitch. However, both consoles (as mentioned above) feature slight differences when it comes to Twitch integrations. In anticipation for the launch of both consoles, Twitch recently released an infographic that details those differences. You can check it out below:
