‘House of Cards’ Will Return to Netflix on Valentine’s Day 2014
Netflix’s Emmy-winning original political drama, “House of Cards,” will return for a second season on February 14, 2014.
From creator Beau Willimon, who adapted the show based on a British miniseries of the same name, the second season of “House of Cards” will continue to follow a fictional, Machiavellian US politician played by Kevin Spacey, and his equally duplicitous wife played by Robin Wright, on their quest for power. Both Spacey and Wright received Emmy nominations for their work on the first season of “House of Cards.”
In addition to Spacey and Wright, the season two cast includes regulars Kate Mara, Constance Zimmer, and Sakina Jeffrey, as well as Mahershala Ali (“Treme”), Kristen Connolly (“The Cabin in the Woods”), Sebastian Arcelus (“Person of Interest”), Nathan Darrow (“Rigged”), Michael Kelly (“The Adjustment Bureau”), and Molly Parker (“Deadwood”).
Season two directors include Carl Franklin (“Homeland”), James Foley (“Glengarry Glen Ross”), John David Coles (“Justified”), Jodie Foster (“Orange Is the New Black”), and Robin Wright.
The streaming service will again make the full 13-episode season available for viewing (bingeing) from the very beginning. It’s a release strategy that Netflix has singlehandedly popularized, though the company is deviating from it for its first original animated series, “Turbo FAST.” For that show, which was produced by DreamWorks Animation Television, Netflix is releasing the first five episodes at once, before distributing the rest throughout next year. When asked why Netflix was switching gears for “Turbo FAST,” the company said it was due to the different production timetables necessitated by an animated program.
The second season is executive produced by Willimon, David Fincher, Joshua Donen, Eric Roth, Kevin Spacey, Dana Brunetti, Andrew Davies, Michael Dobbs, and David Manson. The one-hour drama is produced by Donen/Fincher/Roth and Trigger Street Productions (Spacey’s production company) in association with Media Rights Capital, which also distributes the show.
