Hulu Officially Names Mike Hopkins CEO
Hulu has officially named Mike Hopkins as its next CEO. A board director at Hulu since 2011, Hopkins was president of distribution at Fox Networks Group — a division of 21st Century Fox, which is one of Hulu’s co-owners — prior to landing the Hulu job. Based in Hulu’s headquarters in Los Angeles, Hopkins has already stepped into the role.
He replaces Andy Forssell, who served as acting CEO for Hulu since March 2013, when then-CEO Jason Kilar left the company. Forssell is also leaving Hulu.
“After an extensive search, Mike was simply the best candidate for the job. He has a strong understanding of programming, digital distribution, and consumer behavior, and a great vision for Hulu’s next chapter,” said Anne Sweeney, co-chairman of Disney Media Networks and president of Disney/ABC Television Group, the other Hulu owner that has decision-making responsibilities.
As a reminder, Hopkins’ background is in TV distribution, sales, and marketing. Forssell, along with being acting CEO, was a longtime SVP of content at Hulu, and oversaw the site’s originals strategy. Hopkins’ appointment should tell you exactly where originals fall as part of Hulu’s future, regardless of how “fully aligned” the service’s owners claim they are.Tags: Executive Hire, Fox Networks, Hulu, hulu plus, Mike Hopkins
