Hulu Plus Finally Arrives on Chromecast

/ Oct 2, 2013

When Google released its Chromecast streaming stick in July, the company said it was working to add video services like Hulu to the platform, allowing users to watch video clips, movies, and TV shows from such services via their Chromecast-connected TVs.

Three months later, Hulu has finally launched the Hulu Plus app on Chromecast. Similar to the Chromecast apps for Netflix and YouTube, the new Hulu Plus app allows users to cast videos on Hulu Plus to their TV, as long as every device is connected to the same Wi-Fi network. The app currently supports Android smartphones and tablets and the iPad, with iPhone functionality “coming soon,” according to Hulu senior product manager Karan Nischol.

The app, which was developed by Hulu product teams in Santa Monica and Beijing working closely with Google, also enables multi-tasking. Users can cast a video on their TV while browsing the Hulu Plus app on their mobile device. The Chromecast solution also turns the Hulu Plus mobile app into a remote control, allowing users to play, pause, rewind, and add captions.

This brings the number of Chromecast video apps to four, though with support for YouTube, Netflix, and now Hulu Plus, Google’s streaming device has the major video players covered. Google also hopes to bring other top video services like HBO Go and other TV Everywhere apps on to the platform.

Of note, Chromecast users can still watch Hulu for free by simply accessing the site through the Chrome browser on the device. Of course, Google and Hulu would rather you didn’t, arguing that the experience is much more seamless on the Hulu-developed Hulu Plus app.
