Hulu Renews ‘East Los High,’ Nabs Exclusive Rights to ‘South Park’
During its presentation at the Television Critics Association’s summer press tour, Hulu announced that it has ordered a third season of Latino original series “East Los High” and obtained exclusive streaming rights to all seasons of the animated hit “South Park.”
“East Los High,” an English-language show featuring an all-Latino cast, is a teen drama that focuses on the lives of multiple teenagers growing up in East Los Angeles.
Since the series premiered on Hulu and Hulu Plus in summer 2013, it’s been a popular program for Hulu’s audience — especially women between the ages of 18 and 25. The first season elevated “East Los High” to a Hulu top-10 show last summer, according to the company. The second season debuted last week.
No premiere date was provided for season three, which will be produced by Population Media Center in association with Prajna Productions, Into Action Films, and The Alchemists.
Away from its originals business, Hulu also landed exclusive SVOD rights to “South Park,” the hit animated comedy from creators Matt Stone and Trey Parker. Per a multi-year licensing deal with South Park Studios, Hulu Plus will now offer every season of the show, which debuts its 18th season later this year.
The entire library will also be available for free on Hulu, though that will last only until September 24, when the new season gets going. Following that, Hulu and Hulu Plus will offer next-day access to new episodes.
Hulu and SouthPark.cc.com will also have a “revolving selection” of free episodes available to stream. Hulu says it will be powering the ad experience on SouthPark.cc.com as part of this deal.
Other shows showcased by Hulu at TCA included the upcoming reality-show parody “The Hotwives of Orlando” and the western-comedy “Quick Draw.”Tags: Animated, Comedy Central, digital distribution, east los high, Hispanic, Hulu, Hulu Original, hulu plus, Into Action Films, Latino, Licensing, Prajna Productions, South Park, South Park Studios, SVOD, The Alchemists
