INDMUSIC and TuneCore to Help Musicians Make More Money on YouTube
A music-based MCN you should know of and a music technology company you should be familiar with are partnering to help independent musicians make more money from YouTube.
TuneCore, a music distribution service and rights administration provider, is partnering with INDMUSIC, the MCN most famous for helping Baauer make a lot of money off of his viral hit “Harlem Shake,” to help its artists claim and monetize video clips on YouTube that use their compositions.
TuneCore’s music distribution service enables artists to distribute their content to digital music hubs like iTunes, Google Play, and Spotify, while also retaining all of their original rights. The company also offers a publishing administration service, which ensures artists that they are properly compensated for any uses of their music on the web.
Now, via this deal with INDMUSIC, TuneCore clients will have the same opportunity to generate revenue from YouTube, the world’s biggest video site and one of the biggest suppliers of music content on the web. The offering is available to any artist who signs up for TuneCore Publishing Administration and the INDMUSIC MCN on YouTube.
TuneCore Publishing Administration is available for a one-time fee of $75, which now includes access to YouTube’s Content ID service. Per the deal, artists will earn 90% of all composition royalties and 80% of all sound recording royalties collected from uses of their music on other people’s YouTube videos and channels. Both TuneCore and INDMUSIC claim this is an “industry-best” offering.
Here’s an incredibly long statement from TuneCore president and COO Scott Ackerman:
“Over the past months, we’ve spoken with hundreds of our artists to understand deeply how we can best help them succeed in the YouTube marketplace. We want our artists to earn the money that is rightfully theirs from YouTube when others use their music in videos. For the artists who already use TuneCore as their publishing administrator, we’re working with our partner INDMUSIC to use strong, proprietary Content ID query tools to find more uses of the artist’s music in user generated content, then authorize YouTube to put ads on those videos. We can collect the most money for our artists on YouTube since we manage both rights, with TuneCore administering the composition rights and INDMUSIC managing the sound recording rights.”
INDMUSIC’s network encompasses more than 270 artists and labels and 2.1 billion views. “We meet so many artists who don’t know where to begin nor how to best use YouTube,” says Brandon Martinez, co-founder and CEO of INDMUSIC. Via this partnership, he says INDMUSIC is also offering artists on TuneCore the opportunity to take advantage of his network’s reach to improve their own visibility.Tags: Baauer, indmusic, MCNs, music, Music Rights, Publishers, TuneCore, youtube
