Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin to Headline Netflix Comedy from ‘Friends’ Creator
Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin are going to play rivals-turned-friends in “Grace and Frankie,” a new comedy series for Netflix from “Friends” co-creator Marta Kauffman.
From Skydance Productions (“Star Trek: Into Darkness”), this single-camera half-hour comedy tells the story of its titular characters, Grace and Frankie, two ladies who hate each other whose lives are turned upside down when they learn their husbands love each other and plan to get married. Eventually, as is the case with comedies such as these, the two ladies gravitate toward each other.
Netflix has ordered a 13-episode first season of the show, which will debut on the streaming service next year.
Written and created by Marta Kauffman alongside Howard J. Morris (“Sullivan & Son”), “Grace and Frankie” will be executive produced by Kauffman, Morris, Fonda, Tomlin, Paula Weinstein, and Skydance’s David Ellison, Dana Goldberg, and Marcy Ross.
Not that they need any introduction, but Fonda and Tomlin are award-winning actresses. Fonda has won two Oscars and an Emmy, while Tomlin has won an Emmy, two Tony Awards, two Peabody Awards, and the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor. She also appeared in the Greatest Television Show of All Time, “The West Wing.”
Fonda and Tomlin, reportedly real-life friends, will be reuniting on-screen after starring in “Nine to Five” more than 30 years ago. Fonda is repped by CAA while Tomlin is with WME.
Meanwhile, Netflix’s originals slate continues to grow. “Grace and Frankie” joins upcoming programs such ass the second season of “Orange Is the New Black,” a series based on the adventurer Marco Polo, a sci-fi show from the Wachowski siblings, an untitled family drama from the creators of “Damages,” multiple animated series based on DreamWorks Animation characters, and multiple live-action shows based on Marvel characters.Tags: Friends, grace and frankie, jane fonda, lily tomlin, marta kauffman, Netflix, netflix originals, skydance productions
