JW Player Makes It Easier for Publishers to Bring Video to Android Apps

/ Oct 8, 2014

Video tech company JW Player has launched a new software development kit (SDK) for Android devices, allowing publishers to build the company’s video player and ad features into their native Android apps.

The move is positioned by JW as a way to help publishers adapt to changing content consumption behaviors on mobile devices. For instance, Cisco predicts that by 2018, two-thirds of global mobile data traffic will be video.

With the new Android SDK, publishers using JW Player tech (over 2 million websites, according to the company) will now be able to offer video streaming on their Android apps. Previously, JW Player tech made it possible to include video streaming on mobile websites, but not apps.

“This is our first SDK for devices, and more are coming, including iOS,” said JW Player in a blog post. “We have a similar goal with all of our SDKs: to provide publishers with more opportunities for delivering video content and ads to phones, tablets, OTT boxes, TVs, and other devices.”

Those who elect to use the new Android SDK will retain full control over the user experience as well as in-app branding, the company added.

Following through on JW’s oft-stated goal of providing an “open video ecosystem” for the industry, JW’s SDK for Android won’t require publishers to use the company’s platform services. “You can use the JW Player for Android SDK for video playback only and host content anywhere you want,” the company said.

That said, the SDK will be available for a monthly subscription as part of an annual contract license. Right now, with it being in a public beta, participation in the program is free.

A full list of features available via the Android SDK is listed below:

  • Adaptive HLS video streams for bandwidth efficiency
  • Small screen up to 1080p high quality HD resolutions
  • Live and on-demand media streaming
  • VAST pre, mid, and post roll advertising, with skippable ad units
  • AES-encryption for HLS content protection
  • Progressive download MP4 (single/multi-rate)
  • User-selectable and API-controllable playback quality
  • Audio-only streams (AAC, MP3, HLS audio)
  • Customizable video player controls with full screen mode
  • Video playback and ad impression analytics APIs
  • Configurable poster image for video player
  • Portrait and landscape mode streaming w/phone rotation
  • Android Library Project (.aar), easy to integrate plus demo app
  • Tested on Android 4.1 and higher on popular devices
