Kevin Spacey to Headline IAB MIXX 2014
Kevin Spacey will keynote the 2014 IAB MIXX Conference, an annual event organized and hosted by the Interactive Advertising Bureau during Advertising Week NY. His presenation will focus on how digital platforms are transforming the way artists and content creators thrive in today’s entertainment landscape, said the IAB.
It won’t be a new topic for Spacey, who has given speeches before on the potential landscape-shifting power of digital. For instance, during an address at the James MacTaggart Memorial Lecture at the Edinburgh Television Festival last August, Spacey spoke at length about the binge model that was being popularized by Netflix with the first season of “House of Cards,” and how that portends what’s to come in the entertainment industry.
“Clearly the success of the Netflix model — releasing the entire season of ‘House of Cards’ at once — proved one thing, the audience wants the control,” he said.
Another choice quote: “For kids growing up now, there is no difference [between] watching ‘Avatar’ on an iPad, or watching YouTube on a TV, or watching ‘Game of Thrones’ on a computer. It’s all content. It’s just story. And the audience has spoken. They want stories — they are dying for them. They are rooting for us to give them the right thing. And they will talk about it; binge on it; carry it with them on the bus or to the hairdresser; force it on their friends; tweet; blog; Facebook; make fanpages; silly GIFs; and god knows what else about it. [They will] engage with it with a passion and intimacy that a blockbuster movie could only dream of. All we have to do is give it to them.”
Expect more of that this September in New York. Other personalities confirmed to present at the conference include Katie Couric, the current global anchor for Yahoo News.
