Lucas Cruikshank and CDS Bring Back ‘Fred’

/ Aug 28, 2014

Cover your ears, “Fred Figglehorn” is coming back.

Collective Digital Studio and Lucas Cruikshank, creator of the squeaky-voiced character, are re-launching the Fred YouTube channel, one of the earliest successes stories within the YouTube creator ecosystem.

Focused on tween and family entertainment, the channel will bring the Fred character, as well as feature other characters across a variety of original comedy, music, game show, and animation formats. New shows will start launching on the channel throughout September, with a trailer debuting today.

“Think of this as an expansion on the original Fred Channel, with the same spirit of irreverence, and a really talented group of new kids creating cool stuff,” said Cruikshank in a statement. “Fred Figglehorn will make the occasional appearance and so will I.”

In addition to the content created by Cruikshank and CDS, the channel will also feature videos and characters submitted by fans.

Fred is one of the earliest web-to-every successes. Created by Cruikshank in 2008, the character first became popular via the Fred channel, which in 2009 became the first YouTube channel to cross 1 million subscribers. Partnering with CDS, Cruikshank was able to grow his fan base on YouTube, as well as land deals with Nickelodeon for multiple hit TV movies and a series.

Collective Digital Studio boasts of its ability to expand web properties to traditional screens, and the success of Fred Figglehorn is certainly the earliest example of that. Since then, the company has brought “The Annoying Orange” and “Epic Meal Time” to TV, and is currently working with a trio of YouTube pranksters on a feature-length prank film.

The Fred channel, which has been dormant for a couple of years now, still has 2.3 million subscribers. Cruikshank and CDS will collaborate on producing and programming content for the channel.
