Machinima Unleashes Second Season of ‘Mortal Kombat: Legacy II’
Machinima is widely recognized as one of the top multi-channel networks on YouTube. But if you’ve been following the company at all recently, you know it’s not content with that label. The company wants to be grouped alongside services like Netflix, Hulu, and HBO Go — premium over-the-top platforms that offer access to TV-quality programming.
If you want proof, just look at the type of deals the company has been signing. Or, better yet, just read what the company has publicly said in the past few months.
It’s easy to see why Machinima would want to position itself alongside major OTT players. For all the talk about how YouTube is the future, Netflix (and to a lesser degree, Hulu) is currently seen as the bigger threat. This is because Netflix (and to a lesser degree, Hulu) exemplifies the evolution of TV consumption. It’s still TV, just distributed through a different pipe and with a more flexible viewing option.
So maybe it’s not so much of a surprise when I hear why Machinima chose this month to launch “Mortal Kombat: Legacy II.” The fall TV season is beginning. By premiering the live-action series alongside some TV shows, and beating others to the punch, maybe Machinima inserts itself into the conversation around new TV (or: TV-quality) programming. By releasing all 10 episodes at once, maybe Machinima begins to draw comparisons to Netflix. Maybe, the perception of Machinima as just a YouTube MCN begins to change.
