Maker Studios’ Polaris Offers a Gritty Adaptation of Super Mario Bros.
Give Maker Studios credit — the company wants to be a major media company, and do the things that major media companies do, like produce their own content. Maker and its executive chairman Ynon Kreiz have talked this up a bunch recently as the MCN looks to be known as something other than an “aggregator” of content created by other people.
Today, Maker’s geek-and-gaming vertical, Polaris, is debuting two of four Super Mario Bros.-themed short films from Evan Daugherty, the screenwriter for “Snow White and the Huntsman.” Each of the four films, which are collectively titled “The Four Players,” reimagine a darker, grittier look for a major character from Nintendo’s Super Mario Bros. franchise. The first two, “The Fixer” and “The Addict,” center on Mario and Luigi. The next two, which will be released tomorrow, will be called “The Star” and “The Soldier,” and will focus on Princess Peach and Toad, respectively.
“I had been kicking around the idea for years before I was even working in the industry, so to finally be able to share these films with fans on Polaris is a very exciting thing,” said Daugherty in a statement.
As you are well aware of by now, the Polaris network features top YouTubers like PewDiePie (second to only YouTube itself in number of subscribers), The Yogscast, Dodger, and Toby Turner. The Polaris network overall accumulates over 1 billion views a month across 500 channels.
The four short films from Daugherty will be available on Polaris’ flagship channel. The films are embedded below.
