Maker Studios and Red Hour Bring ‘Next Time on Lonny’ to Maker.TV Before YouTube

Maker Studios and Ben Stiller’s Red Hour Digital are premiering the second season of faux-reality series “Next Time on Lonny” on Maker.TV, the MCN’s new owned-and-operated video destination, before airing it on YouTube.

Created by Alex Anfanger and Dan Schimpf, “Next Time on Lonny” skewers the “next time on…” segments on reality TV shows. Each episode begins with a mundane scene that you would typically find on any reality show, featuring talking heads and a constantly moving camera. When that scene ends, the episode cuts to a “next time on…” segment, which on this show is always absurd and over-the-top and not actually a preview what happens in the next episode.

Anfanger and Schimpf teamed with comedy site Cracked to produce the six-episode first season, which was later discovered by Stiller and Red Hour Digital. The multi-platform studio, behind another popular online reality parody, “Burning Love,” inked a pact with Maker Studios last fall to bring a new 10-episode season to the masses.

Season two launches with the first three episodes premiering today on Maker. TV (here, here, and here). Going forward, a new episode of “Next Time on Lonny” will air every Tuesday and Thursday on Maker.TV. It will then re-air the following Wednesday and Friday on Maker’s comedy channel Nacho Punch, beginning June 4.

The decision to window the show by first placing it on Maker.TV is an obvious one. The MCN space is looking to lessen its reliance on YouTube on the path to profitable business models, and owning a video home that they can call their own is at the top of the list. The hope is that by putting premium content on an owned and operated platform, a network such as Maker Studios could attract higher ad rates from major advertisers.

Maker has already locked in a deal with Verizon to sponsor the second season of “Lonny.” What will be interesting to see is how much of “Lonny”’s viewership occurs on Maker.TV versus Nacho Punch.

Season two of “Next Time on Lonny,” which shifts the setting from Brooklyn to Los Angeles, is directed by Schimpf and executive produced by Red Hour Digital and Maker Studios. Other executive producers include Red Hour co-founder Stuart Cornfeld, head of digital Mike Rosenstein, Debbie Liebling, Anfanger, and Schimpf.

The cast is anchored by Anfanger, who plays the titular role.

Seeing as this is a Red Hour production, though, and knowing the incredibly cast the studio lined up for three seasons of “Burning Love,” you won’t be surprised to know that season two of “Lonny” will feature guest appearances from Adam Scott (“Parks & Recreation”), Patton Oswalt (“Ratatouille”), Paul Scheer (“The League”), Jerry O’Connell (“Jerry Maguire”), Haley Joel Osment (“The Sixth Sense”), Kal Penn (“Harold & Kumar”), Beck Bennett (“SNL”), and Jon Daly (“Kroll Show”).

Maker talent KassemG and Epic Lloyd (“Epic Rap Battles of History”) will also appear.

In addition to “Lonny,” Anfanger, Schimpf, and Red Hour are working on a comedy series called “Big Time in Hollywood, FL” for Comedy Central. The series will star Anfanger, be directed by Schimpf, and produced by Red Hour and Brillstein Entertainment Partners.

Anfanger and Schimpf are managed by Brillstein.
