Mayor Bloomberg Cuts Ribbon On The Made in NY Media Center

The Made in NY Media Center opened its doors today with Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg presiding over the ribbon-cutting ceremony. The Media Center will act as a hub for filmmakers, storytellers, and general technophiles eagerly seeking a place to develop ideas and create new content and technologies.

The center will be run by the Independent Filmmaker Project, which will look to support participating artists by offering them access to educational programs, networking opportunities, and potential investors, among other resources.

The Made in NY Media Center is designed for creators of all types, from filmmakers and producers to game developers and others working in new media.

By connecting multiple disciplines through one space, the Mayor’s Office of Media and Entertainment commissioner Katherine Oliver expressed a desire that the Media Center becomes a place for creatives to incubate “groundbreaking cross-genre content.”

Education is also a top priority at the Made in NY Media Center. IFP instructors will teach courses on cross-media strategy and creativity. Specific tech-related courses will be taught by New York global education company General Assembly. Early classes and workshops will focus on crowdfunding basics, public speaking, and WordPress training.

Classes begin at on October 15. Various memberships will be made available, facilitating anything from desk-space in the space’s community center to networking event invitations.

The 20,000-square-foot physical space stands at 30 John Street and is equipped with 40 flexible work spaces, classrooms, editing rooms, screening rooms, and a fancy art gallery. (Sadly, no word on if it also offers a facility for the Ninja Turtles to practice martial arts.)

The Media Center’s opening ceremonies this morning kicked off with the announcement that Roots drummer Questlove would serve as its founding artist-in-residence.
