Mobile Grabs Huge Share of Streaming Activity on VEVO
It’s been a big Q2 for online music video platform VEVO. According to a January-June 2013 viewership report, VEVO — a joint venture of Sony Music, Universal Music Group, Google, and Abu Dhabi Media — saw a massive rise in mobile streaming from 2012 to 2013 with year-to-year increases reaching as high as 407 percent.
Overall streams from January to June reached a record-breaking 12.4 billion surpassing last year’s averages by 25 percent. VEVO’s audience increased by 27 percent coming in at around 1.6 billion total viewers for Q2.
Mobile, tablet, and connected TV streaming continues to dominate VEVO viewing trends as nearly 50 percent of streams came from mobile and connected TV devices, according to the report. In addition, the VEVO mobile app saw a 26 percent increase in annual downloads. Since its release, the VEVO mobile app has been downloaded over 28 million times.
With other content providers reporting similar trends in mobile viewing, it seems clear that the future of streaming video will not necessarily be via desktop. Mobile streaming, as VEVO’s Q2 figures clearly illustrate, is quickly becoming the new normal for consuming web video among most audiences.Tags: mobile, Music Content, Research, Vevo, youtube
