Maker Studios is at the annual MIPCOM content market in Cannes, and is pitching a Maker-branded clips show customized for international distributors and TV networks.These “branded blocks of programming” would be hosted by top digital talent (from Maker’s network of 55,000 creators) and/or traditional talent.

MIPJunior: “Second” Screen Is Priority for Children’s Programming

If the mantra of MIPJunior was “content, character, story” as executives repeated throughout the weekend, the tagline was: “There’s an app for that.”
While the need to create engaging children’s characters was highlighted by speakers in keynotes and panels in the two-day conference proceeding Mipcom, the leaders from brands and channels discussed their increased focus on development of engagement tools for kids now that the “second screen” is often the first.

BSkyB Backs Online Video Startup Pluto.TV

BSkyB continues to boost its investment portfolio.The U.K. pay TV giant has invested $500,000 into online video startup Pluto.TV, the companies announced announced Monday. The partnership with Pluto.TV — which programs online content into TV-like channels that can be watched at any time — builds on Sky’s effort to invest in U.S. startups. Previous investments include ad tech firm Sharethrough, streaming service Roku, virtual reality technology developers Jaunt and video delivery firm 1 Mainstream.

Vimeo has inked a deal with Journeyman Pictures for the exclusive release of the Sundance-winning documentary “Return to Homs” on Vimeo On Demand.

Blue Ant Media and Mondo Media have secured a deal with Canadian broadcaster Corus Entertainment to air a new animated TV series that features content from their Bite On Mondo digital development program.

Chinese online video platform Youku Tudou has hired Teddy Gu as chief product officer, and Jerry Li as senior VP.
TV4 and GlobalGirl Launch Girls-Themed Digital Channel
TV4 Entertainment has partnered with GlobalGirl Media, an organization that promotes the empowerment of girls through various content and social initiatives, to launch a new girls-focused digital channel. The GlobalGirl Media Network, which goes live on October 11 — “International Day of the Girl” — will provide a mix of original and acquired video content produced by, for, and about girls and young women.


CBS Studios Int’l & Netflix Strike Multi-Territory Licensing Deal; Includes ‘Penny Dreadful’: MIPCOM

European Netflix subscribers will finally be able to get hooked onShowtime’s Penny Dreadful. Announced today, CBS Studios International and Netflix signed a multi-territory licensing deal for CBS and SHOWTIME series in Netflix’s six new Euro markets: Germany, Austria, Switzerland, France, Belgium, Luxembourg, as well as the Netherlands. Under the agreement, Netflix obtains exclusive first-window rights to Penny Dreadful in these territories.

New York Comic-Con: Netflix’s ‘Daredevil’ Unveils New Cast Additions, First Images

At New York Comic-Con today, Netflix series Daredevil, which stars Charlie Cox as the blind Marvel Comics superhero/lawyer, announced four new castings. Ayelet Zurer will play Vanessa Marianna, Vondie Curtis-Hall has been cast as Ben Urich, Bob Gunton as Leland “The Owl” Owlsley and Toby Leonard Moore as Wesley.

Netflix 4K Content Will Cost More

Netflix users will have to shell out a bit more for Ultra HD content. The company is now charging customers $11.99 per month for access to Netflix 4K streaming. The new plan allows users to stream up to four programs simultaneously.
