Verizon, Redbox Shut Down Netflix Killer No One Wanted

A couple of years ago, the notion that Verizon and Redbox could come up with a video service that could take on Netflix seemed plausible.

Then we saw what the two companies were offering: A service that give users access to an uninspiring catalog of online video, and the ability to rent some DVDs as well.

We’ve Seen This Movie Before

Netflix made news this week by announcing “Crouching Tiger 2,” the first scripted studio feature film to be released simultaneously in theaters and on its platform. Better yet, it struck a deal with Adam Sandler to film four movies with Netflix as the sole distribution platform in nearly 50 countries.


Film deals reflect Netflix’s growing clout

The movies — produced through Sandler’s Happy Madison Productions with Netflix — would be available exclusively through the site, bypassing the traditional movie distribution process.
