Netflix Loves Big Data, But Won’t Use It To Make TV Shows

Netflix has more than 48 million subscribers, and it knows a ton about all of them: What they watch, when they watch, when they stop watching. Netflix uses all of that data to help it pick and fund shows, like “House of Cards”, and to help promote different shows to different people. But it insists that it won’t use all of that Big Data to make shows.

When VideoInk interviewed Link from the comedy duo Rhett & Link earlier this year as part of a Playlist Live interview series, he picked Flula Borg as a fellow YouTuber to watch out for in 2014. That comment seems prophetic in hindsight with the news that Borg, who specializes in absurdist comedy and music videos on the world’s biggest site, has signed on to star in “Pitch Perfect 2.”

Starz will debut a full-length episode of its new drama Power via Twitter tonight after posting a sneak peek that leveraged the social site’s one-click video earlier today. The 50 Cent-produced series doesn’t air until June 7, but you wouldn’t know that based on the number of digital platforms that the show will be available on leading up to the TV premiere. In addition to Twitter, Starz’s mobile app, Facebook, MySpace, YouTube, Facebook, Vudu, Amazon Instant Video and Sony Entertainment Network will also distribute the content this weekend.



FIFA World Cup Unveils Second-Screen Digital Push Mobile, social top priorities for soccer fans

Soccer fans tuning into the upcoming FIFA World Cup will have no shortage of digital platforms on which to chat, thanks to several new efforts on the part of the sports organization. FIFA has updated its website to include a new section called Global Stadium that aggregates all of the content surrounding the 64 matches in real time and is designed specifically for smartphone-wielding fans.




Nielsen Families Become ‘Framilies,’ Ratings Giant Begins Registering Mobile Devices In TV Households

As part of a broader push to include mobile users in its TV and digital video ratings estimates, Nielsen this month will begin recruiting smartphone and tablet computer users in its so-called “people meter” households. In a notice sent to clients late last week, Nielsen said a “full rollout” of mobile devices in its electronic TV measurement system would be completed by April 2015, but it did not say when and how it would integrate TV viewing on mobile devices in its national and local TV ratings estimates.

Where brand content goes next

After nearly three years as publisher of The Awl and its network of sites, John Shankman, 32, is boot-strapping his own venture, Hashtag Labs. The company will act as both a production studio for branded media and a consultancy for publishers looking to bone up on everything from understanding programmatic to implementing a native ad strategy. Shankman likened it to “talent agency” for brands that want to be publishers.
