Netflix Snags Fox’s “New Girl” In Multi-Year Deal

New Girl is coming to Netflix starting today. The streaming service and Fox have inked a multi-year deal to bring the network’s highest rated comedy to the subscription-based digital outlet. The first season of the Chernin Entertainment and 20th Century Fox TV-produced series from creator Liz Meriwether will be available July 1 with subsequent cycles like the recently ended Season 2 to follow after their broadcast season is complete.

Despite its enormous popularity, YouTube is still figuring out the best way to turn eyeballs into dollars. So it makes sense that the first company-issued white paper, out this morning, zeroed in on an audience that is delivering reliable and rapidly growing returns: Gamers. Portable TV: 10% of Video Views Going to Devices

Lean back and watch – that appears to be the surprising attitude of many smartphone and tablet owners who make up an increasing share of overall video viewing. Streaming media platform Ooyala says that video views to devices in Q1 rose by 19% over the previous quarter alone, now accounting for 10% of all views. Ooyala samples streaming media to over 200 million unique users worldwide among its partners (including Food Network, TVGuide, ESPN, Dell, the Times and Telegraph. The company says video growth on tablets (now between 5% and 6% of all views) and smartphones (more than 4%), is on the same curve as last year when their combined total share doubled between Jan. 1 and Dec. 31. In Q1 2012, mobile devices had only a 4% share.

BBC Announces 8 New Comedy Pilots Exclusive to iPlayer

The BBC has announced a new roster of comedy pilots that will broadcast exclusively on its online ‘catch-up’ service iPlayer. The British broadcaster will showcase eight new comedy pilots on iPlayer, two of which have already been commissioned for a full BBC Three TV series.

Japanese Public Broadcaster’s License Fee Victory Raises Concerns About Mobile Device Users’ Liability

Japan’s public broadcaster NHK won a $1,100 (109,000 yen) judgment against a household that refused to sign a license fee contract since buying a television in 2009. The wording of the judgment could mean users of smartphones, tablets or other devices with TV tuners, but who don’t own television sets, are liable to pay the monthly fees.

Showtime’s ‘Ray Donovan’ Takes Over NYT App

Showtime is taking over The New York Times, or at least its digital ad inventory, to promote its forthcoming series, “Ray Donovan,” set to debut July 3. The campaign, developed by Medialets and placed by OMD, includes a full takeover of the NYT iPad app on June 30, as well as interactive banner ads which are already live on the NYT Web site. Showtime’s NYT iPad app takeover includes full-page interstitial ad units that appear whenever the user navigates between pages. Expandable interactive video banners allow the user to view a trailer for “Ray Donovan.” Users can tap the video at any time to pause it and bring up informational hotspots about the series and characters. As the trailer concludes, viewers are invited to download the entire first episode for free, download the trailer’s soundtrack from iTunes, and download the Showtime Anytime app from the iTunes stores.

Pandora Goes Beyond Music with Spoken Word: The Comedy Genome Project 

Since May 2010, Pandora has a little start up inside its bigger start up: They have been developing a spoken word content area leveraging their technology via Comedy. The volume of content included is considerably smaller  for the “Comedy Genome Project,” with 1,700 comedians on 25,000 tracks; with this relatively small data set, it will be harder to create as accurate a predictive model as their music product apparently enjoys.
