HBO Could Get A Huge Lift With Online Subscriptions

HBO is nominated for 99 Emmy Awards this year, and like every year nowadays, that’s more than any competitor. It’s TV’s proudest brand.

So, with the Emmys taking place Monday, it is just great timing that Re/Code’s Peter Kafka is reporting that, according to Barclay’s analyst Kannan Venkateshwar, HBO could add about $600 million to its bottom line if it sold online subscriptions. Right now, users have to have a cable authentication to get HBO Go online.

Foot Locker nabs two clips this week on the Adweek/VidIQ top 10 branded video chart with its “Short Memory” series. Both videos show Houston Rockets star James Harden trying to pick up quirky tips for the upcoming NBA season from Charles Barkley, Scottie Pippen and Landon Donovan.

In one of the 30-second spots, Harden grills Donovan about the U.S. soccer team’s World Cup loss this summer. But Donovan has already forgotten about his team’s defeat. The spot has been viewed 2.87 million times with more than 1,620 Facebook shares since it was uploaded on Aug. 12.

Ever since news broke in October that YouTube was planning a subscription service, people have been asking how YouTube would get people to pay to watch music videos. It’s more than a fair question. For over nine years, YouTube has conditioned people around the world to watch music videos without the expectation of payment.

It turns out people were asking the wrong question. Given the details in a recent post on the Android Police blog, the question appears to be if Google can convert YouTube viewers into subscribers to a paid, audio-only, YouTube-branded subscription service.
