NBC to Live Stream the Super Bowl…and Show TV Ads on Tumblr

/ Jan 21, 2015

NBC is inviting football fans to watch the Super Bowl online for free this year with its “Super Stream Sunday,” 11 hours worth of coverage of the Super Bowl XLIX and some bonus content.

The NBC streaming event will start at 12pm ET on Sunday, February 1 and consist of pre-game analysis before the Seattle Seahawks and New England Patriots begin playing. Of course, the half-time show (featuring Katy Perry and Lenny Kravitz) will be part of the bargain, as will a new episode of NBC series “The Blacklist,” which will stream after the game to make sure digital viewers stay hooked to NBC content.

While access to live streaming on NBC usually means viewers are already paying for the network through cable/satellite providers, this year’s Super Bowl Sunday offering is different—it’s simply a way to showcase NBC’s TV Everywhere to a larger viewer base.

“We are leveraging the massive digital reach of the Super Bowl to help raise overall awareness of TV Everywhere by allowing consumers to explore our vast TVE offering with this special one-day-only access,” Alison Moore, NBCUniversal’s EVP of TV Everywhere, said in a statement.

Viewers can stream the Super Bowl through NBC.com or through the NBC Sports Live Extra app. International viewers will have to pay $9.99 to watch the game online.

In addition to showing the actual Super Bowl online, NBC will give online access to another key part of the major sports event—the ads. After Super Bowl related ads air on TV, NBC Sports’ Tumblr page will show them online (its new Tumblr page launched today). Meanwhile, the NBC livestream of the game will feature different, digital-specific ads from the ones shown on TV/Tumblr.
