Netflix, City, Shomi Partner on Canadian Thriller Series ‘Between’
Shomi, an upcoming SVOD service from Canadian media giants Rogers Communications and Shaw Communications, might have been designed to rival Netflix in the Canadian market, but that doesn’t mean it won’t work with the global streaming giant, either.
Shomi has partnered with Netflix and City, a local broadcasting division of Rogers, on an original “survivalist thriller” series called “Between.”
Created by writer-director Michael McGowan (“Still Mine”), “Between” will tell the story of a town under siege from a mysterious disease that has wiped out everyone except those 21 years old and under. The series will explore the power vacuum that’s created when a government has quarantined an area and left its inhabitants to fend for themselves.
The first season of the show will span six, hour-long episodes. They will premiere on City and Shomi in Canada, and on Netflix in every other territory where the streaming service is available. Additional broadcast details will be announced at a later date, the companies said.
“Between” will star Jennette McCurdy, best known for her role in Nickelodeon’s now-canceled hit series “Sam & Cat.”
Emmy-winning director Jon Cassar (“24”) has signed on to direct the first two episodes of “Between,” which began principal photography today.
The series is produced by Don Carmody Television, Mulmur Feed Co. in association with Elevation Pictures Corp. Creator and showrunner Michael McGowan will executive produce alongside Don Carmody (“Resident Evil”), David Cormican (“The Tall Man”), and Naveen Prasad, EVP and GM of Elevation Pictures Corp.
The deal was negotiated by Prasad and Jayme Alter (for DCTV). Elevation will oversee worldwide distribution.Tags: Between, Canada, City, Drama, Jennette McCurdy, Netflix, netflix originals, Rogers Communications, Shomi, SVOD, thriller
